You’re right, we do have to radically alter our civilisation. And what that is going to take is a huge leap of imagination. The trouble is, our societies suck the imagination out of us right from an early age. All we’re encouraged to do is ‘innovate' within already established structures. In other words, rearrange the deckchairs on the Titanic. So in my 8-year-old’s creative writing at school, that meant taking a story about a chicken and then changing that to a different animal so you make the story your own — not the kind of creative imagining that’s going to come up with a brand new energy source that’s yet to be discovered…!
