You’re absolutely right that the old system needs to go. And the best way to get rid of it is to create a compelling new system that makes the old one obsolete. Yes, we must hold leaders to account, fight injustices and minimise any further pillaging and destruction. But the most effective way forward is to all start living our lives in ways that disempowers everything that the old system considers of fundamental importance — i.e. money, power over people, accumulation of property, neverending growth and consumption etc.

Here’s a thought: if we could build communities that are largely self-sufficient (in terms of food, energy, basic skills and resources) and then start to cooperate between these communities to build richer, more complex relationships that deliver goods, services and benefits not possible within a single community, then I could see a new networked system beginning to rise up whilst the old one flounders and dies. But in order to achieve this, we would all have to be prepared to give up the old system (with all its addictive perks) and commit to a new way of life that would be better for the planet and better for our own mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing.
